Why infamous? You may ask.

Ok, in case you are english-speaking people and you don’t know anything about this, this video was an internet phenomenom (internet meme) in its spanish version. Later, it was required to participate in the InsideOut Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival, in its Latin Trash section (you can see it programmed here). The Story

The origin and story of this phenomenom is very simple: we made the video to participate in a local video parody contest, in Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico (in the heart of the Gulf of Mexico), we won the contest (no big deal) and the video became quite popular among the people of this town. Next, it was uploaded to the internet (not by us) and it began to spread quite fast. It was shown in some mainstream media networks in Mexico, Argentina, Spain and other spanish speaking countries.

You may ask again: why infamous?? Well, because the video is a real piece of crap (it was made in six hours), contains rude language, something usual in Alvarado, and it contains gay sexual references as a joke, and with a crudeness that U.S.A. americans may consider offensive (we are americans, too). In a time when there’s an offender in every corner, the cultural differences are evident: in Alvarado this attitude and this language are common to native citizens and even little boys use some of the dirty words that the video chants. Children of all ages have seen the video and laugh at it, and the gay community is very happy to see themselves depicted in a, say, glorious gay manner.

Lyrics

The lyrics are a spoof of the original song, called “Don” of the argentinian rock (??) band Miranda. It’s about a gay young man that sings to her “husband” (called mayate) or boyfriend that he is so gay like him and that he (the boyfriend) will end liking being penetrated by the ass, as much as the singer. It’s convenient to remark that, despite all cultural differences, in Alvarado (and other sites of Mexico), there’s the word “mayate” (a little insect) that refers to the “boyfriend” of the homosexual, who usually thinks he is not gay as his gay lover. The “Donkees Meeting” refers to a local parade in October in which straight men dress as women and exhibits themselves in the town.

The english translation (not adaptation) was created by the authors with a little aid from american friends and sent to the InsideOut Festival at curators’ request. Here is the english translation (as shown in the subtitles):

In case you wonder, VideoGENTE is a non-profit association that makes videoclips parodies, spoofs, of movies, commercial ads and video sketches just for the sake of fun. Or maybe not only, but also. (???)
